New social activities will be available at each AED meeting or announced via e-mail. They range from bowling to ice skating to Grey’s Anatomy nights. Social events are intended for you to get to know your fellow AED members.

 Duke Medical School Visit- Monday, October 5th in the On Wisconsin Room at the Red Gym from 4-5pm. No late arrivals please! Learn of the new admissions requirements and curriculum at Duke Medical School from Maureen Cullins of Duke University Medical School. Counts as one social credit!

 Kickball Social- Get to know other AED members and receive one social credit by attending our first social of the school year—a game of kickball! The festivities will be held on SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 20th at 3pm at Edward Klief Park (on the corner of Bowen Ct. and Orchard St. near St. James Elementary School on the south side of Regent St.). Food, drink, and plenty of competitive fun will be provided. Wear comfortable clothes and athletic shoes.  Ice Cream Social- Join your fellow AED members for our annual ice cream social on THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 24th at 6:30 PM. There is no need to reserve a seat—just show up at the Daily Scoop and enjoy an ice cream cone or dish on AED.

 AED Socials!!! We are always looking for new and exciting ideas for socials and we want your input. If you think of anything that sounds like a good idea for a social just let Annie Bartosic (bartosic@wisc.edu) or Tyler Wanke (twanke@wisc.edu) know. If the idea gets approved you will receive one social credit for organizing the event and another for attending, so it's a quick and easy way to get credits.



Short Term Volunteer Activities
New Volunteer opportunites will be provided at each AED meeting or announced via email. They cover a variety of areas including, but not limited to, hospital opportunities, school and after school programs, and nursing homes. Wherever you end up volunteering your time, be sure to enjoy it! It's a great opportunity for you to go out and experience life in health care.

• Join the AED Once-A-Week Blood Donation Group- Youngblood, American Red Cross Campus Blood Donation Centeris looking for donations and volunteers.  Open every Thursday and Friday (while classes are in session) from 10am to 4pm at the Wisconsin Lutheran Chapel (220 West Gilman Street).  Receive 1 volunteer credit for donating blood or for volunteering weekly throughout the semester.  For donors, just sign up on the donation sheet under AED (group #127).  Call 608-263-4590 on Thursdays or Fridays from 10am to 4pm to schedule an appointment.  We would like to have at least one AED member to donate blood or volunteer each week! • Pop Tabs- Collect 50 pop tabs (the little metal things used for opening a can of pop) and receive 1 volunteer credit.  Please rinse all tabs in water, put them in a Ziploc bag with your name and ID number, and turn them into Tyler VanDyck (tvandyck@wisc.edu) on or before the last meeting of the semester, 12/8/09.  All pop tabs will be donated by AED to the Ronald McDonald House Charities in Madison.  They recycle them in exchange for funds to support their various programs.  Note that you may only receive 1 volunteer credit per semester for collecting tabs, Yoplait lids, box tops, etc.
  
  

Long Term Volunteer Activities
These opportunities are great for those who want to get involved in a steady, committed form of volunteering with a particular organization. You can earn 1 volunteer credit each semester for your long-term commitment to an organization (about 2-3 hours weekly). Make your own form including: your name, 1-sentence description of the activity, dates of the activity (from-to), and a signature from your supervisor. Return form to Stephanie Pedersen or send it to the AED mailbox by the end of the semester (limit 1 form per semester)

Note Regarding Blood Drives: If you don’t see the Once-A-Week sign-in book at a blood drive, ask for it.  If they don’t have it available, email Allison, the AED OAW Club #127 Coordinator (aul@wisc.edu) and let her know the date and location of the donation.  She will communicate this information to the Red Cross so your conation will be credited.  The same information applies if you donate outside Dane County or if you forget to sign the book.  You can encourage roommates and friends to donate blood and sign for AED; they don’t need to belong to AED to help support our OAW group.

• Get Involved With Research Opportunities-Wednesday, September 16 from 5-6:30 p.m. in room 22, Ingraham Hall. PIZZA WILL BE SERVED. Please RSVP by Tuesday, September 17th to 265-5106. Why do research as an undergraduate? Because the scientific method is about a way to think.  Analytical thinking.  Analytical thinking is the basis of deductive reasoning.  Deductive reasoning is the basis of diagnosis.  You need to be able to think analytically to get a good buy on a stereo, buy a car, become a scientist, or become a health practitioner. What will we learn at this workshop? You will learn the value of research opportunities as well as ways to initiate and become involved in research. The session is led by Dr. Duello (see below for more information) who is both a professor and has served on admissions committees for medical school and other science-related graduate school programs.  With this combined experience, Dr. Duello is a great resource on what it takes to succeed/gain admission to various graduate/professional programs.  She is an outstanding resource for students looking for research as well as interested in continuing education in the science field.  She has helped hundreds of students locate undergraduate research opportunities and wants to pass the skill set on to you, too. I am not a science major, should I still attend? Yes!  Research opportunities exist in all areas of study, from the sciences to social sciences.  This is how we learn more about the world around us.  If you think you might be interested in graduate school or just don't know, being involved in research can help you get in or help you decide about a career path. I am only a freshman, should I still go?Yes!  The earlier you become involved with opportunities the better.  This workshop is for students of all levels. I am not sure if I want to go into graduate school, should I still come?Yes!  As described above, having a research experience helps develop your critical thinking skills.  In addition, it can help prepare you for work, add to your resume, and maybe even inspire you for a future career. Tell me more about Dr. Duello.Professor Duello has taught biology, conducted biological research (basic and clinical), and provided biology advising to undergraduates for 26 years on the UW-Madison campus.  She is a also the Assistant Director for Diversity Initiatives for the Endocrinology-Reproductive Physiology (ERP) graduate program (hormones/reproduction) and has served on the admissions committees of the Endocrinology-Reproductive Physiology Graduate Program, the Cell and Molecular Biology Program, the Medical School Admissions Committee, and the Medical Scholars Program.
